Project Overview

Hospitals depend on uninterrupted power for life-safety systems, operating theatres, intensive care units, imaging equipment, and HVAC. A grid outage that halts ventilation or life-support equipment is a direct risk to patient safety, so hospitals are among the most demanding standby-power applications. This hospital required a diesel generator for hospital use that would meet NFPA 110 life-safety requirements and accept full load within seconds.

H&C supplied a 1,250 kW standby generator built around a Cummins KTA50 engine and Stamford alternator, housed in a sound-attenuated, weatherproof canopy. The system starts automatically on mains failure, transfers the hospital's essential and life-safety loads, and maintains stable voltage and frequency through step changes such as elevator and imaging-equipment inrush.

Challenge & Requirements

The hospital required a diesel generator for hospital standby that complied with NFPA 110 for emergency power, including a 10-second load-acceptance time and adequate on-site fuel for extended outages. Low noise was essential near patient areas, and the system needed to handle the inrush of motors, MRI chillers, and elevators without voltage collapse. A redundant fuel supply and automatic, unattended operation were mandatory.

Solution & Implementation

H&C configured a Cummins KTA50-G3 engine matched to a Stamford HCI544F alternator for 1,250 kW standby output, controlled by a Deep Sea DSE7320 for automatic start, transfer, and remote monitoring. The unit was specified with a heavy-duty alternator and governor to hold voltage and frequency stable under block loads.

The generator was assembled and full-load tested at the H&C factory, including a 100% load bank run and step-load response verification. A sound-attenuated canopy keeps noise within hospital limits, and the fuel system includes a day tank with bulk storage and transfer pumps to support extended runtime.

H&C managed export logistics and on-site commissioning with the hospital's engineering team. Installation covered the automatic transfer switch, cable termination, and integrated testing of the emergency power system before handover, operator training, and delivery of a complete spare-parts kit.

Project Results

The diesel generator for hospital standby has passed all NFPA 110 commissioning tests and monthly test runs, providing reliable life-safety power through every utility interruption since installation.

The hospital reported full confidence in the system's fast, automatic response and low noise, and has retained H&C for ongoing service and maintenance support.
