Philippine Land Bank Backup Power
Manila, Philippines — 5.2 MW Parallel EPS
Project Overview
Land Bank of the Philippines required a dependable emergency backup power system to protect its Manila headquarters from grid outages, which could otherwise halt transactions and compromise data integrity. H&C delivered a hybrid parallel system integrating two new 1,600 kW Cummins gensets, sourced from the USA, with two existing 1,000 kW Caterpillar units — four gensets running in stable multi-brand parallel.
Custom synchronization software bridged the different control protocols between the Cummins and CAT systems, while an automatic transfer switch (ATS) and a 3,000L standalone fuel tank completed the installation. The system restores power within 10 seconds per ISO 8528 and is monitored remotely through SCADA. Full-load tested at the H&C factory and commissioned on site, it has kept the bank's critical operations running through repeated outages since 2018.
Challenge & Requirements
The bank's Manila headquarters sits on a mains supply subject to repeated outages, and an interruption is not simply an inconvenience: it stops transactions and puts customer data at risk. The requirement was therefore not only more capacity, but capacity that could take over automatically and hold the critical load for the duration of an outage. The site already ran two 1,000 kW Caterpillar units, so the new plant had to parallel with equipment from a different manufacturer using a different control protocol — a multi-brand arrangement that had to be synchronised, protected and proven before it could be trusted with live banking operations.

Solution & Implementation
The configuration was built around the existing plant rather than replacing it. Two new 1,600 kW Cummins gensets, sourced from the USA, were specified to work alongside the legacy 1,000 kW Caterpillar units so that all four machines could share load as a single system. Because the two makes use different control protocols, the paralleling scheme was designed around custom synchronization software instead of a single-vendor controller, and the existing switchgear was retained.
Each new genset was assembled and tested at the H&C factory in Jiangsu before shipment, including full-load running, so that the sets arrived proven rather than being commissioned for the first time on site.
The sets were then delivered to Manila and installed alongside the existing Caterpillar units. A 3,000L standalone fuel tank and an automatic transfer switch (ATS) completed the installation, and remote monitoring over SCADA was configured before handover so the bank's facilities team could supervise the plant without an on-site operator.
Project Results
The system restores power within 10 seconds per ISO 8528 and has held the headquarters' critical load through repeated mains outages since 2018. Load sharing between the new Cummins sets and the legacy Caterpillar units has remained stable in parallel running, and remote monitoring through SCADA gives the bank's facilities team visibility of the plant without an on-site operator.
Full-load testing was completed at the H&C factory before shipment and repeated during on-site commissioning, so the multi-brand parallel arrangement was proven before it was relied on. The installation remains in service at the Manila headquarters.
