Diesel Generator Maintenance Schedule
Service intervals and fluids to keep your generator reliable
A clear, brand-independent maintenance schedule for diesel generator sets — first service at 50 hours, routine service every 250 hours, and a major service every 1,000 hours.
Why Regular Maintenance Matters
A diesel generator is expected to start the moment it is needed. Skipping routine service is the leading cause of failure-to-start during an outage. Clean oil, coolant, and fuel keep the engine ready and extend its working life — often well beyond 15,000 running hours.
The schedule below is a general guide for diesel generator sets. Always follow the engine manufacturer's manual for your specific model, and shorten intervals under harsh conditions such as dust, high humidity, or continuous heavy load.
Service Intervals
Follow these service milestones by running hours or calendar time, whichever comes first:
First Service
At 50 hours or 1 month — replace engine oil and oil filter, check for leaks, and re-torque fittings after the break-in period.
Routine Service
Every 250 hours or 6 months — change oil and oil filter, check coolant level, inspect belts, hoses, and battery.
Major Service
Every 1,000 hours or 12 months — replace fuel and air filters, flush coolant, and perform a full inspection.
Overhaul Interval
Major overhaul at 15,000–20,000 hours, depending on load profile and how well routine service has been followed.
Fluids, Filters & Systems
Engine Oil
Use SAE 15W-40, API CH-4 grade (or higher). Check the level before every start and change it on the service schedule.
Coolant
Use a 50:50 mix of ethylene glycol and distilled water. Never use untreated tap water, which causes corrosion and scale.
Fuel System
Keep fuel clean and free of water. Drain water and sediment from the tank and primary filter regularly, and replace fuel filters on schedule.
Load Testing Standby Generators
A standby generator that never runs under load can suffer wet-stacking — unburned fuel and carbon building up in the exhaust system. To keep the engine healthy and confirm it can carry the real load during an outage, run it under load at least once a year at 75% or more of rated output for 2 hours.
